Mazatlan Activities Guide

Architecture
The Teatro Angela Peralta (Theater) is a beautiful building in the center of Mazatlán that was built during the “porfiriato” (the presidency of Porfirio Díaz). It is also the headquarters of the cultural festivals of Sinaloa. The whole theater was completely restored in its neoclassical style of the 19th century, the time it was at its peak. Another interesting building is the Catedral Basílica de la Purísima Concepción ( The Cathedral of the Pure Conception), a neo Gothic, neoclassic, 19th century construction.

The Basílica de la Purísima Concepción

This cathedral, built between 1876 and 1899 by Miguel Lacarra in downtown Mazatlán, will definitely catch your attention. It was built in the neo-Gothic and neo-classical styles, and its façade has ogival arches and sidewalls with balustrades and pediments. The interior decoration is in the eclectic style, and it has a neo-Gothic altar.

Beaches
The best beaches in terms of gentle slopes and calm waves are those found along the area separating the Zona Dorada from the three islands. Sábalo Beach is ideal for all sorts of aquatic sports and the place from which to take the fun-filled ride over to Venados Island. Another great spot, just next to Sábalo Beach, is Cerritos Beach.

Cerritos Beach
Warm, beige-colored seawater bathes the coarse sand on this gently inclined beach. It is about 3 km long and surrounded by small hills (Cerritos), after which it was named. Not heavily frequented.

Los Pinos Beach
The temperature of the water varies between warm and fresh; the beach is gently inclined and the sand is dark beige. It stretches some 200 meters from Paseo Claussen and is 7 km from downtown Mazatlán.

Norte Beach
The perfect place to enjoy the seafood on offer at the palm hut restaurants scattered along this beach facing the open sea. The water is warm and the waves normal-sized. This is one of the longest beaches in the country.

Olas Altas Beach
Located right next to the center of Mazatlán, this beach is especially beautiful at the time of the sunset. The waves coming in from the open sea are moderate in size and good for surfing. The water is warm and inviting.

Sabalo Beach
Apart from the magnificent view of three big islands, this beach is ideal for swimming, practicing water sports or just passing the time of day. The hotels in the Zona Dorada cause the place to be full of activity. The waves are normal-sized and the water is beautifully warm.

Camping
If you want to camp near the beach, there is a trailer park in the hotel section of the Zona Dorada, opposite the Islas de Pájaros, Venados y Lobos (Bird, Deer and Wolf Islands). The facilities there include bathrooms and electricity. The La Posta Trailer Park is located on Avenida Rafael Buelna.

Cuisine
One of the seafood dishes you will most enjoy in Mazatlán are the shrimp, cooked your favorite way, as the shrimp found here are large and particularly tasty. Fish, lobster, and crab cooked Sinaloa-style can be enjoyed at restaurants in the center, among other places in town. You can also find international specialty dishes all along the sea front, from Olas Altas to the Camarón Sábalo hotel zone.

Festivals
One of the largest and most traditional carnivals in the world, comparable only to that of Río de Janeiro and New Orleans is held annually in Mazatlán. The tradition began in 1898 with a parade of carriages and decorated bicycles. Since then, several other activities have been incorporated and the floats have developed beyond all recognition.

Pagan festivity celebrated a few days before Ash Wednesday, lasting five days in Mazatlán, during which time the fiesta achieves moments of great intensity and joy. All the inhabitants participate in many different ways and every year a great deal of effort is expended on decorating the parade. It is a time of games and masquerades, naval battles with fireworks in the bay, dances, color and music.

Fishing
Mazatlán is one of the best spots on the Mexican Pacific for marlin and sailfish fishing. The excellent services at the docks mean that a very large number of boats can compete in the annual fishing tournaments. Experts in the sport also give courses on the art of deep-sea fishing.
