322-5-3621 Mexican Fiestas: Many major hotels have weekly Mexican Fiestas, which offer a
Mexican buffet and open bar, and a chance to hear mariachis, marimbas, and
other regional music and folk dancing from different parts of the country.
Gustavo Fong, the congenial host of the La Iguana Tourist Center downtown,
started Vallarta’s first Mexican Fiesta more than 30 years ago. It’s held
Thursdays and Sundays. The Sheraton hosts a lively Mexican Fiesta Thursday nights,
featuring everything you might expect and more, including fireworks and
cock fights. Tickets to the event are available at the lobby. The hotel
also hosts a Sunday Champagne brunch with live mariachi music. The Westin Regina hosts a fiesta Wednesday nights at Los Arcos, its
colorful and spacious patio. The event features games, prizes and a mock
cockfight. Children under 12 get a 50 percent discount. The Krystal hosts a fiesta three times a week during the season,
with a delicious buffet; those who attend usually get free entry to their
popular disco, Christine. The Krystal also stages a Fiesta Brava every
Thursday during the season, where you can participate in a do-it-yourself
bullfight (small bulls) in the hotel’s own bullring. There are other good Mexican Fiestas at the Camino Real and Buena-Ventura
on Friday.
Shopping: In Puerto Vallarta you can find a sampling of just about everything
made in Mexico: silver, blown glass, pottery, serapes, sandals and other
arts and crafts. There are a number of excellent shops -- some near the beach, some in
major hotels, and a great many on the main downtown shopping strips,
Juarez and Morelos. Art galleries are numerous, adding a wonderful artistic ambiance to this
resort. Works by some of Mexico’s most well-known contemporary painters
and sculptors, as well as international artists, are beautifully
displayed, and tours of artists’ studios are offered by select galleries.
Works by young, as yet unknown artists can be seen at the "Pueblito del
Sol Cultural Center". Remember, art is duty free to the United States.
One of the largest malls is VILLA VALLARTA, located opposite the
Plaza Las Glorias and Continental Plaza hotels. There are lots of stores
here connected by walkways and portals to permit convenient shopping. "Las Iguanas Festival Center", Marina Vallarta’s leading mall, is a
brightly colored two-story complex with waterfalls, cascading pools and an
open courtyard. As the name suggests, it is more than a collection of
stores, it also houses fine restaurants and nightspots, and hosts cultural
events. Located at the entrance to the marina is Plaza Neptuno, a pretty
shopping center with garden rest areas. "Plaza Marina" is another shopping center that is beautiful to see
and fun to visit. They are still selling space, however, so you won’t find
a great variety of stores yet. The "Mercado Central", located downtown, between the two bridges,
is a typical market, with negotiable prices and every conceivable souvenir
item. As in most beach resorts, stores in Puerto Vallarta are closed during the
hottest time of day, from 2 to 4 p.m. Most open in the morning around 10
a.m. and stay open until 8 p.m., so you’ll find plenty of time for
strolling the streets and discovering your favorite shops. |
