Chapter 447 After traveling so much, I couldn't fall asleep.
"We've arrived." Gu Junze dismounted, walked to the carriage, and personally helped Chu Ruohan up.
The waiter's eyes lit up as soon as he saw them.
These guests were all dressed in fine clothes and had an extraordinary air about them. The one leading them was particularly distinguished and exuded an air of nobility.
Especially that lady, although she was dressed simply, she could not hide her innate gentle temperament.
"Are you distinguished guests Mr. Gu?" The waiter hurriedly stepped forward and asked with a smile.
Gu Junze nodded: "Exactly. Is the room ready?"
"All ready, all ready!" the waiter said enthusiastically as he led the way. "You distinguished guests have come from afar. I have prepared your superior rooms and hot water for washing up, as instructed."
Song Ruyan stepped forward to help Chu Ruohan and whispered, "Young Madam, you should take the children upstairs to rest first. I'll stay with you."
Chu Ruohan nodded gratefully to her and gently woke Xuan Ge'er: "Xuan'er, wake up, we're at the inn."
Xuan-ge rubbed his sleepy eyes and yawned slightly: "Are we there yet? I want to eat..."
The group followed the waiter upstairs to the most spacious rooms in the inn.
Gu Junze personally inspected the room's layout and only allowed Chu Ruohan and the child to enter after confirming that everything was in order.
“This room is for the lady and the children,” Gu Junze instructed, then told the shadow guards, “You will take turns guarding the door and not let your guard down for a moment.”
The shadow guards bowed and acknowledged the order, then dispersed as instructed, some guarding the entrance while others went to check the surrounding area.
"What would you like for dinner?" the waiter asked obsequiously, his eyes glancing at everyone's attire from time to time.
"Prepare some light and easily digestible dishes," Gu Junze said calmly. "Fresh vegetables and fish soup, plus two side dishes, that should be enough."
"Yes, I'll arrange it right away." The waiter nodded repeatedly and turned to go downstairs.
After helping Chu Ruohan settle the two children, Song Ruyan breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that Xiao Qingchen was already sound asleep: "Young Madam, you must be tired after a long day. Wash up and rest for a while."
Chu Ruohan nodded, but her gaze fell on the darkening sky outside the window: "Those people we met on the way here today, they must have come for us, right?"
“Young Madam has a good eye,” Song Ruyan said without hiding anything. “Those people are highly skilled and move around mysteriously. If it weren’t for the Shadow Guards’ vigilance, we might have really been in trouble.”
“Fortunately, you and Dr. Qian are with us,” Chu Ruohan said softly, “otherwise, it would have been really difficult for me to handle these emergencies alone with two children.”
"Hey, that's for sure," Song Ruyan patted her chest and laughed heartily, "I didn't train for nothing!"
Chu Ruohan was amused by her appearance, and the tension in her heart eased slightly.
She gently stroked the rosy cheeks of the sleeping Xiao Qingchen, then her gaze fell on the well-behaved Xuan Ge'er playing beside her, and a wave of affection welled up in her heart.
"Xuan'er, come here, let me wipe your face," Chu Ruohan called out.
Xuan-ge'er obediently walked over and let his mother wipe his little face with a warm handkerchief.
While wiping, Chu Ruohan took the opportunity to check the amulet on her son's body, confirming that the hidden tiger amulet was still in place.
Before long, Gu Junze pushed open the door and entered, followed by two waiters carrying several steaming dishes.
"Put it down," Gu Junze instructed. The waiters quickly set the food out and bowed as they left the room.
“The Shadow Guards have already checked,” Gu Junze said, closing the door and lowering his voice. “This inn is quiet, and there’s nothing unusual about it for now. But for safety’s sake, we’ll take turns keeping watch tonight.”
“Then I’ll help keep watch!” Song Ruyan immediately volunteered.
Gu Junze nodded in agreement: "You will team up with Dr. Qian and be responsible for the safety of the lady and the child."
Dinner was simple, but because everyone was tired from the long journey, they ate with great relish.
Xuan-ge'er's appetite was whetted by a bowl of steaming fish soup. He held the bowl in his little hands and drank it sip by sip.
"This fish soup is good," Chu Ruohan said after taking a sip. "It's fresh and delicious, and it must be made with river fish."
Gu Junze sat to the side, watching the family eat with gentle eyes.
This kind of ordinary and warm life is especially precious to him.
After dinner, Chu Ruohan coaxed the two children to sleep.
Xiao Qingchen quickly fell asleep again, but Xuan Ge'er seemed to be unaccustomed to the unfamiliar environment and tossed and turned.
"What's wrong with Xuan-ge'er?" Gu Junze walked over and asked softly.
"He probably slept too much during the day; he seems more energetic now." Chu Ruohan touched her son's forehead.
Gu Junze thought for a moment, then took out a small wooden carving and handed it to his son: "This is a little horse that Daddy carved by hand. I'm giving it to Xuan'er to play with."
Xuan-ge'er's eyes lit up. He carefully took the wooden carving and stroked it lovingly, saying, "Thank you, Father!"
"Alright, it's time to sleep," Gu Junze gently stroked his son's hair. "We still have to travel tomorrow."
Xuan-ge nodded, hugged the little wooden horse, and soon fell into a deep sleep.
After the two children fell asleep, Gu Junze pulled Chu Ruohan to the window and whispered, "Although the group of men in black we met today has been dealt with, the journey is long, and there's no guarantee that there won't be any other ambushes."
Chu Ruohan held his hand: "I'm not afraid of danger, I'm only worried about the children being frightened."
“Those people were ruthless and not ordinary assassins,” Gu Junze said gravely. “It seems that someone in the capital is eager to take my life.”
“They won’t succeed,” Chu Ruohan said firmly. “Since we’ve anticipated this, we naturally have a foolproof plan.”
Gu Junze looked at her deeply, his eyes full of admiration: "My Han'er, you have always been so brave and strong."
As night deepened, the lights in the inn went out one by one. After soothing the children to sleep, Chu Ruohan lay down on her bed, but couldn't fall asleep for a long time.
The occasional hooting of an owl outside the window added to the tranquility and mystery of the night.
About an hour later, Chu Ruohan heard a slight noise outside the window.
She opened her eyes alertly and saw Gu Junze standing by the window, looking out at the night sky through the crack in the window.
"What's wrong?" Chu Ruohan asked softly, afraid of waking the sleeping child.
Gu Junze turned around and gestured for her to come over: "Something's up."
Chu Ruohan quickly got up and went to the window.
Following Gu Junze's gaze, they saw an unusual red light appearing on the distant horizon. It was not the dawn, but rather resembled firelight.
“It’s north of the town,” Gu Junze said in a low voice. “The Shadow Guards have already gone to investigate.”
As soon as he finished speaking, a series of light footsteps sounded, and a shadow guard appeared silently outside the door.
Gu Junze opened the door, and the shadow guard whispered a few words in his ear. Gu Junze's brows furrowed even more.
